The Best Animal Lover Coffee in Antigua Guatemala

Updated: Jun 15

When visiting Antigua Guatemala, you'll quickly discover that coffee is more than just a beverage it's part of the city's culture. From charming colonial cafés to hidden garden coffee shops, there are countless places to enjoy a cup of Guatemala's world-famous coffee. Many offer beautiful views, local flavors, and cozy atmospheres. However, there is one place that offers something truly different: Antigua Cat Cafe.

Located in the peaceful neighborhood of San Pedro El Panorama, just south of Central Antigua, Antigua Cat Cafe combines a relaxing coffee experience with a meaningful animal welfare mission. More than just a café, it is a sanctuary where visitors can connect with rescued cats while supporting a unique community project.

A Hidden Oasis in Antigua

Surrounded by nature and away from the busy tourist streets, Antigua Cat Cafe sits on a spacious property featuring two beautiful gardens. One garden is dedicated to the resident cats, providing them with a safe and enriching outdoor environment. The second garden serves as a tranquil space for visitors to enjoy coffee, special events, and beautiful views of the surrounding volcanoes and mountains.

At the center of the property stands the main house, which includes guest rooms, a kitchen, and comfortable common areas where visitors can relax and interact with the feline residents.

Home to More Than 40 Rescued Cats

What truly makes Antigua Cat Cafe special is its community of over 40 permanent cat residents. Each cat has its own story. Some were rescued from difficult situations, while others were abandoned or left without proper care. Today, they live in a safe environment where they receive quality nutrition, veterinary care, and daily attention.

Visitors often find themselves quickly becoming attached to certain cats. Some are playful and energetic, while others prefer quiet companionship. Spending time with them creates a unique experience that cannot be found in a traditional coffee shop.

More Than a Café: A Rescue Mission

The story behind Antigua Cat Cafe began with more than sixteen years of experience working with cats and animal rescue in Guatemala. The project was founded through the vision of Canadian animal advocate Angela Kerslake, in collaboration with Emily Reilly from New York and Luis Callejas from Guatemala.

After witnessing the growing needs of abandoned animals, they began supporting rescue efforts and animal shelters in the region. Over time, the project expanded into dedicated rescue spaces that provided food, shelter, and medical care for cats and dogs. This journey eventually led to the creation of Antigua Cat Cafe—dedicated to offering both a feline experience and specialty coffee for local and international visitors.

Today, the café continues to promote animal welfare, community education, volunteer opportunities, and responsible pet ownership.

A Different Kind of Coffee Experience

While many cafés in Antigua focus solely on serving excellent coffee, Antigua Cat Cafe offers visitors the chance to enjoy their favorite drink while making a positive impact. Every visit helps support the care of rescued animals and contributes to a project dedicated to compassion and second chances.

Whether you are a cat enthusiast, a coffee lover, a traveler seeking unique experiences, or simply someone looking for a peaceful place to unwind, Antigua Cat Cafe deserves a spot on your Antigua itinerary.
